A psychoeducational assessment is a specialized process that helps us get a thorough understanding of an individual’s strengths, and/or the nature of their difficulties with academic performance, learning, or concentration. A psychoeducational assessment can also identify mental health-related challenges that impact learning, performance, and functioning. If appropriate, detailed recommendations for clinical or educational services and accommodations are provided to nurture and bolster the individual’s strengths, and to support their areas of difficulty in school, work, and social settings.
There can be many possible causes for these types of difficulties people experience, including specific learning disorders and learning disabilities, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, psychiatric disorders, substance misuse, medical conditions, brain injury, problems with motivation, and/or stress. For this reason, a psychoeducational assessment must comprehensively evaluate aspects of a person's functioning and life history.
Psychoeducational assessments typically consist of interviews with the client and possibly with significant others (e.g., a parent or close friend), a series of questionnaires and in person tests, and a review of records such as previous test/assessments, transcripts, and school reports. It is common for these assessments to require 6 to 9 hours of in-person services with the client, and the process results in an assessment report comprising results, strategies, recommendations, and accommodations for school and the workplace (if appropriate).
